Connect – Our goal is to engage as many men in and around our community as possible. This means planning big events that will appeal to a large range of individuals, and planning smaller activities that will allow men with common interests and passions to bond with one another. Our focus is to ensure that all men feel welcome at any of these Men of Hope events.
Comprehend – During Boot Camp, Intensives, Culture Conversations, and many other MOH events, we will challenge the men of our community to examine the Biblical definition of what it means to live as a godly man. We believe that a Godly man is one who takes up his cross daily in an effort to follow Jesus Christ. We also believe that Godly men are defined by the Gospel and therefore marked by the following characteristics:
- Above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money, able to manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, has a good reputation with outsiders, worthy of respect, sincere, does not pursue dishonest gain, keeps hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience, hospitable, loves what is good, self-controlled, upright, holy, disciplined, encourage others by sound doctrine and refutes those who oppose it. – (Titus 1:6-9 & 1 Timothy 3:2-10)
Important Note: These characteristics do not define us. Jesus – and his work on the cross – defines us. These characteristics are a byproduct of the Holy Spirit’s work as He reshapes us in the image of Christ. We also do not pretend that any of us ever completely or perfectly display all of these characteristics; our common understanding is that through the strength of Christ, we can edge ever closer to this goal.
Challenge – Through large/small events, intensives, retreats, and coaching relationships, we endeavor to challenge the men at Hope to live as Godly men – pushing the men of our community to be a continual blessing to those around them. Gospel and community ought to lead to transformed lives and good works. The following passages give a clearer picture of how we challenge one another to live:
- Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. – 1 Peter 1:13
- Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. – Hebrews 12:1-3
Men of Hope is not a replacement for small groups or for corporate worship on Sundays, and it is much more than just a social network for guys. This community of believers strives to honor God in all we do and bring glory to His kingdom. Along our journey we hope to bridge together men from all walks of life as we grow in our understanding of the Gospel and relentlessly encourage each other to pursue Christ.
